Okay everyone this is a little wake up call. We be bloggin' is a little thing we like to say. This page was inspired
by our TAG teacher Mrs. V (she's awesome). Alright so the first blog we were asked to do had this in the beginning:
Repeating History "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana,
The Life of Reason, Volume 1, 1905
What does this quote have to do with our current unit of study? What common themes have you discovered in the texts and
movie clips? Give specific details to support your ideas.
so Sarah and Aine, (it's really weird talking about yourself in third person), said the following:
"This quote has a lot to do with our unit. When Santayana said this, he was entirely correct. In "Freedom
Writers", the L.A. gangs were in fact, creating their own Holocaust, just as Ms. G. had said. The kids didn't know anything
about the Holocaust, thus creating their own. Once they learned about all of the innocent people that died during the Holocaust,
they were determined to change it. In "Remember the Titans", the football team was suddenly desegragated (<--is that how
you spell it?), but the players did not really accept it. They sat at different tables at lunches, they argued with each other
even when they agreed on certain points. Once the coach took them on a run to the Gettysburg battlefeild and told them the
story about it, they realized what they were doing to each other by completely ignoring the other, and started to fix it.
They sat together at lunch and they actually started acting like a team. Those are some of the instances that we've seen that
Santayana's quote applied to. More later (maybe :P).

"the common theme i have found within the movie clips we have viewed in our recent classes as well as the
texts is... hmm... that the people of the world need change and that the change that is needed is achievable. in the movie
freedom writers the teacher, whose name is not remembered by me, realized her class had some sort of on going war that needed
to end before something terrible happened between them. she knew she needed to help her students change themselves for the
better and end the racial tension in her class. she did exactly that by showing her students how all of their hateful comments
aimed at each other will inevitably end in something fatal. she brought them to a holocaust museum, and made them read the
diary of anne frank. in one of their last school years with her she assigned her class a list of books which reminded her
of them. as they read they began to realize what they were doing to each other and that a dark ending was all they would have
to look forward to if they kept treating each other with the same racist views as before. they stoped fighting because of
their race and started a "fight" for peace.
i'm not done but there's no more time so i'll just add another comment later. -Aine"
If we ever post something else on that blog that has to do with that actual topic then we'll keep you posted. If you

The next blog we were asked to do was this...
Imagine... So how do we change the world?
create your own idea based on John Lennon's "Imagine":
Imagine all the people/ Living life in peace.../
You may say I'm a dreamer/ But I'm not the only one/ I hope someday you'll join us/ And the world will be as one/
A brotherhood of man/ Imagine all the people/ Sharing all the world.../
You may say I'm a dreamer/ But I'm not the only one/ I hope someday you'll join us/ And the world will live as one/
"Imagine" presents the idea of "all the people/Living life in peace/A brotherhood of man." How do we make this happen?
Personal level? School level? Community level? National level?
So here's what we posted...
"It is a great idea of what the world should be like. Seeing this blog, I googled the lyrics to “Imagine”.
I also went onto iTunes and listened to the sampler. Lennon’s idea of a world like this is not just a dream. It’s
possible! “How do we make this happen?” you ask. It’s actually pretty simple. Knowing me, this is going
to turn into a giant essay, so be prepared to read! On a personal level, all you have to do is to stop segregating. Hating
someone that is different from you just because they do the same to you is never justified. All you do is creating a bigger
mess. You know the quote, “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!” by Sir Walter Scott?
It’s just like that, except for we’re weaving a tangled web when we’re all “hating” (wow, that
sounds dumb coming out of my mouth). I would change it to like “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice
to hate,” but that just wouldn’t sound right :p! All of the problems in our world were only created because you
don’t like someone that is different from you. Like the Holocaust (I know that this is really from the other blog, but
it goes!). Hitler thought that the Jews were different and inferior to him, so he killed them off to make the world “purer”.
I mean, how ridiculous is that?!?!?! THAT created a HUGE problem. Hmmm…what was it called??? Oh right! WORLD WAR II!
Giant problem, don’t you think? On a school level, it might be a little bit harder than just on a personal level. The
cliques are the major problem. The jocks, the preps, band geeks, orch dorks, what is up with them? People think that some
people are inferior to them. Jocks think that EVERYONE is below them. It’s the same with preps. Band geeks and orch
dorks just basically blend in together, me and Aine, Aine and Brenna. I know that you all can think of people like this. There
are so many more cliques that I can’t even put them all down. The authorities (principals, teachers, etc.) should begin
integrating the students. Like not letting the students choose their peers’ seating charts (I’m not even going
to say who did that because it might cause some outrage :P). I mean, it might do some good, for the people who made up the
seating chart! Sometimes you may be put in a seat near your friends, but really only if the students making the charts like
you or not. Like someone who just happens to sit ********** of me. Not saying where because you might just happen to know
who it is. He/she was assigned there away from their friends (probably just because the people though that he/she and their
friends talked to much, but really, the assigners were the ones who talked too much). I just know that the assigners, as we’ll
call them, sit near each other and everyone else is separated. OK, I’m kind of getting off topic, so I’ll get
onto the next paragraph. On a community level, there is so much that the public officials could do that would be so easy!
Just getting people together to know each other would help. Once a month, maybe, they could hold a “mixer” for
everyone. They could say that if you knew someone, you couldn’t go to them at all during that time. You could even do
that in the schools! Most families are comfortable with the people in their neighborhood only. If someone was originally in
their neighborhood and they moved away, they’re still friends with them. Some people don’t even try to be friends
with new neighbors. Or neighbors that were there originally! Holding mixers for the members of the community would help people
get to know each other and get out of their comfort zones. I mean, you could meet great friends just randomly bumping into
them. Me and Mackenzie C became good friends just because our friends wouldn’t run with us on a 45-minute run for track!
We ran together and got to know each other pretty good. Then we learned that we were both in orchestra, Mark Wood, etc. etc.
etc…Then came along my lying to her to figure out when her skating show was and telling the entire Block 3 class about
it after my presentation, but we won’t go there. OK, getting off track again. I tend to do that. On a national level,
we could do something like they tried to do with the Kellog-Briand Pact. With this pact, they tried to outlaw war. It proved
ineffective, and it obviously doesn’t work because we’re in the middle of a war that seems like it’ll turn
into WWIII :P!!! I think that it would take an international, not just national effort to achieve John Lennon’s dream
that he showed in “Imagine”. We need something like the K-B Pact to help us achieve peace in the world. OK, I’m
a natural writer, so obviously this has turned into an essay. I have so many ideas that I could make a book out of them! So
I should probably get off right now, since it’s 8:30 at night. I might put more later.

"Everyone has their own versions of nirvana. one person's idea of peace and tranquility may be something completely different.
Don't get me wrong, it's obvious a change is needed and the change that is needed is achievable (cough, cough) but it will
take quite a bit of time. We need to get people to open up not only their minds, but their eyes as well. Those who think all
is well and nothing should change need to wake to a dark sky just once in their life and realize that life's not all just
sunshine and rainbows. Rachel's challenge came to our school, the message of this presentation got through to (and i mean
really changed them) very few, for many others it had no effect whatsoever, it was just another presentation and then there
were a few who got caught up in good feelings for all for a couple of days. Now I ask the readers of this blog who graduated
school to remember back to your days and think how well did you know the administrators and all of the people who decided
what you should learn when and how well you should know it. this units theme has been calling for us students to be more accepting
of all people regardless to who they are. This is completely and entirely achieveable if we just take the time to get to know
each other. Now back to having you think of how well you knew your school's administators, it is my belief that the administrators
think they have done their part by giving us one assembly at the beginning of the year and thinking that will really get the
message through to them. I am hoping that not only the building principles but the school board as well read this comment
that I have left for all to see and rethink how they run our schools and hopefully LISTEN to the STUDENTS and their concerns.
It may seem like i have gotten off topic but that is my proposal of how we move for change within our own school. As for the
community, they need to see that if us "kids" are worried about something this serious then maybe, just maybe they'll realize
that they probably should be concerned with it too. I have jazz band now so I must end with one of my favorite quotes that
I believe fits quite well with this unit, "No one person is greater than I, and I am no greater than any one person." - Quote
from Aine Evangelista herself! ~Aine"
